William Morgan invented volleyball in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The rules evolved in the next few decades, with the "set" and "spike" introduced, then the "three hits" rule and the back row hitting guidelines. Volleyball was a demonstration sport at the 1924 Olympic Games and a full medal sport in 1964. It was a Pan American sport by 1955.
A volleyball court 18 metres long and 9 metres wide. The men's net reaches 2.43 metres and the women's net 2.24 metres. There is a line 3 metres from and parallel to the net, considered the "attack line". This line divides the court into "back row" and "front row" areas. After a team gains the serve, its players must rotate clockwise through the three areas. The team that wins a point serves for the next point. Each team consists of six players. A typical three-hit combination is a "bump" then a "set" then an attack "spike."
