Volleyball - Beach

William Morgan invented volleyball in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The rules evolved in the next few decades, with the "set" and "spike" introduced, then the "three hits" rule and the back row hitting guidelines.

In the 1920s and 1930s, people started to play volleyball on the beach, a sport grew popular first in California, France, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and Russia. Beach volleyball steadily grew in the ensuing decades, with the U.S. and Brazil starting to play the dominant role. It was included in the 1996 Olympic Games and in the Winnipeg 1999 Pan American Games.

Beach volleyball is played on a 16- x 8-m sand court. There are two players a side. Players may use any part of their body to hit the ball, which must be returned within three hits. A block counts as a hit. In beach volleyball, matches are played for the best of three sets.
