One of the oldest modern Olympic sports, gymnastics was contested at the 1896 Olympic Games (men's artistic) with women's artistic events in the 1928 Games. Rhythmic gymnastics took form in the 1940s to make its Olympic debut in 1984. And trampoline became the third gymnastics discipline at the 2000 Olympic Games. All three are featured at the Pan American Games.
Gymnastics is a very challenging sport, demanding strength, power, flexibility, agility, courage, and a combination of technical precision and artistic creativity. When these elements are mastered, the performances appear almost effortless and are riveting to watch.
Newest to major competition is the trampoline. Each trampoline routine consists of 10 elements. Five are required: (1) a skill that lands on the stomach or back; (2) a skill that takes off from the stomach or back; (3) a double somersault (forward or backward) with or without a twist; (4) a double somersault (forward or backward) with a minimum 360-degree twist; (5) a somersault (single or multiple, forward or backward) with a minimum 540-degree twist. A panel of judges includes two "difficulty" judges and five "execution" judges.
