One of the oldest modern Olympic sports, gymnastics was contested at the 1896 Olympic Games (men's artistic) with women's artistic events in the 1928 Games. Rhythmic gymnastics took form in the 1940s to make its Olympic debut in 1984. And trampoline became the third gymnastics discipline at the 2000 Olympic Games. All three are featured at the Pan American Games.
Gymnastics is a very challenging sport, demanding strength, power, flexibility, agility, courage, and a combination of technical precision and artistic creativity. When these elements are mastered, the performances appear almost effortless and are riveting to watch.
Rhythmic gymnastics is a unique combination of sport and art. Gymnasts demonstrate balance athletic skill, music interpretation and artistic expression. Before three panels of judges, they perform a variety of movements such as leaps, pivots, balances, skips and circles. While they do so, gymnasts must manipulate an apparatus – either rope, hoop, ball, clubs or ribbon – to correspond with the rhythm and character of the accompanying music.
