Equestrian - Jumping

With origins in ancient civilizations, equestrian was first included in the Olympic Games in 1900. By 1912, all three Olympic disciplines – dressage, jumping and eventing – were featured in the Games. As well, equestrian has always been part of the Pan American Games.

In show jumping, the horse and rider jump over series of obstacles that vary in height and width, and often include an open-water jump. Penalties are incurred for knocking down rails (four faults for each obstacle), for exceeding the time limit (one fault for each second over) or for refusals (four faults). The rider with the fewest number of faults in the fastest time is declared the winner.
