With origins in ancient civilizations, equestrian was first included in the Olympic Games in 1900. By 1912, all three Olympic disciplines – dressage, jumping and eventing – were featured in the Games. As well, equestrian has always been part of the Pan American Games.
Dressage is like a dance performance, comprised of a series of movements that are judged on a scale of one to 10. The tests are performed in a sand arena of 60 m x 20 m. In the Olympic Games, dressage competitions include three rounds. Riders strive for harmony, lightness and a free, flowing regular movement of the horse at all paces, giving the impression that the horse is executing all exercises on its own. Results determine the team results and the scores from all three rounds are used to calculate the individual standings.
