Presented by RBC, the Canadian Olympic School Program is designed to inspire students to achieve their personal best. It features values-based Olympian stories at a variety of levels to increase accessibility. Each story is written at Gold (grades 6-7), Silver (grades 4-5) and Bronze (grades 2-3) reading levels. A financial literacy pack of math-based lessons has also been developed.
The Canadian Olympic School Program was created in the 1980s by the Calgary Olympic Winter Games Organizing Committee and distributed to schools in Alberta. Beginning in 1987, the program was introduced nationally by the Canadian Olympic Committee and since then years, hundreds of thousands of children have participated.
Since 2007 the Canadian Olympic School Program has engaged high school students in a variety of subjects. Cross-curricular project packs place students in authentic Olympic Games leadership roles and challenge their thinking to independently work through Games-time issues that associate the values with the Olympic Games.
The Canadian Olympic School Program links students with the Olympic Games, our Olympians and the Olympic Torch Relay. Through a series of educational resources, the excitement and inspiration of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is linked to learning outcomes in social studies, language arts, math, science and physical activity.
The program, developed "for teacher by teachers", is designed to promote Olympic values and the importance of pursuing personal excellence in all facets of life. The three core values of the Canadian Olympic Committee are Passion, Integrity and Excellence. These are explored in the Canadian Olympic School Program through fair play, leadership, excellence, respect and perseverance.
The Canadian Olympic School Program is delivered online at http://www.olympicschool.ca/ and http://www.ecoleolympique.ca/. Teacher- and student-specific areas maximize individual engagement and learning experience.
