A sea of red and white took over Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square Wednesday, as hundreds of Olympic fans assembled to take part in a nationwide virtual "wave".
Petro-Canada teamed with three-time Olympic figure skater Kurt Browning to lead Canadians in a massive wave in Toronto’s downtown core. People of all ages rallied together in brisk conditions, cheering loudly and showing their support for Canadian athletes – and, as it turns out, the athletes' families.
With temporary grandstands invading the popular shopping district, participants practised their best wave techniques with the legendary Browning as conductor. Everyone was also able to create their own virtual wave video at the event, by filming their hands in different positions, simulating the actions of a wave.
Petro-Canada, official Olympic sponsor, recognizes that most Canadians will not be able to attend the Games, so why not tap into Canada's pride and rally a nation behind the Olympics – by creating the world’s largest wave. Canadians of all ages, even those living in other countries, can participate in the wave from the comfort of their own home by visiting http://www.iwilldreambig.ca and selecting "Join the World’s Longest Wave".
The event tied into the company's Canadian Athlete Family Program, which aims to allow all of Canada's Olympians and Paralympians the chance to have their families by their side in 2010. Petro-Canada has committed to providing two immediate family members with event tickets, four nights’ accommodation and transportation during the Games.
Discover how far the wave has travelled by checking out Petro-Canada’s website and submitting your own wave to show our 2010 Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls that Canadians believe in their dreams.
